Empowering Through STEM: Soap-Making Skills for Refugee Youth and Women

Empowering Through STEM: Soap-Making Skills for Refugee Youth and Women

As part of its ongoing commitment to empowering refugee youth and women through practical STEM education, REWO (Refugee Women Organization) recently facilitated a hands-on soap-making training session in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement. This session, held under REWO’s STEM empowerment initiative, provided young women and girls with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to produce affordable, eco-friendly soap using locally available materials. Participants not only learned the science behind saponification and basic hygiene principles, but also explored how such skills can open doors to economic independence, improved sanitation, and community resilience. By integrating science, creativity, and entrepreneurship, REWO is creating safe, skills-based learning spaces where young refugees especially girls can thrive, innovate, and lead. This initiative reflects REWO’s belief that STEM education is a pathway to dignity, leadership, and opportunity—and that refugee women and girls are powerful agents of change when given the right tools and training.

A Growing Community

Today, REWO has evolved into a vibrant community of women and youth who not only support each other but also engage with local stakeholders to advocate for the rights and needs of refugees. Empowering Women Leaders in Crisis

Empowering Women Leaders in Crisis

Forced displacement often pushes women to the margins of decision-making. REWO is challenging that by equipping refugee and host community women with leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement skills. Through targeted training programs and mentorship, women are stepping into leadership roles in village councils, school management committees, and peace-building forums platforms once dominated by men. Beyond the grassroots, REWO facilitates platforms for women leaders to influence humanitarian planning, local government engagement, and district-level forums. The organization ensures that refugee women’s experiences inform policies on gender-based violence, livelihoods, climate resilience, and education.
