Women Uplifting Women: Refugee Women’s Organization Empowers Group to Produce Sanitary Pads In an inspiring story of empowerment and community-driven change, a group of women has come together to produce reusable sanitary pads thanks to the support of the Refugee Women’s Organization (REWO). This initiative is more than a livelihood project; it is a powerful movement led by women, for women, to restore dignity, promote menstrual health, and create opportunities within their community. The group, formed and supported through REWO’s women’s empowerment program, was trained in tailoring skills, menstrual hygiene management, and small-scale entrepreneurship. With these skills, they began producing affordable, eco-friendly sanitary pads tailored to the needs of girls and women in the refugee settlement. Access to sanitary pads has long been a challenge in refugee settings, leading to school absenteeism, health issues, and social stigma for many girls and women. This initiative addresses that gap directly providing both a practical solution and a platform for women’s voices to be heard. “These pads are not just products they represent our strength and ability to support one another,” shared one group member. “We are proud to be part of something that is making such a difference in our community.” The impact is already visible. Girls are attending school more consistently. Women have a source of income. And conversations around menstrual health once considered taboo are now being embraced with openness and support. The Refugee Women’s Organization continues to provide guidance, materials, and connections to expand the initiative and ensure its sustainability. As the group grows, it serves as a powerful example of how community-based, women-led solutions can create lasting change. This project proves that when women are given the tools and trust to lead, they can uplift entire communities one pad at a time.

Empowering Women for Community Leadership

At the heart of REWO’s mission is the belief that empowered women are key drivers of positive change in their communities. In line with this commitment, REWO recently conducted a leadership training program for women leaders from refugee and host communities in Yumbe District. The training aimed to strengthen the leadership, advocacy, and community engagement skills of women who are already playing vital roles in their communities whether as grassroots leaders, group coordinators, or community volunteers. Through interactive sessions, participants gained knowledge on effective communication, rights-based leadership, conflict resolution, gender equality, and community mobilization. “We are equipping women with the tools they need to influence decisions, advocate for their rights, and contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and development,” said one of REWO’s program officers. Beyond building personal confidence, the training fostered networking and peer learning among women leaders, encouraging them to support one another and amplify their voices collectively. This initiative is part of REWO’s broader commitment to promoting inclusive leadership, advancing gender equality, and ensuring that women especially those affected by displacement have the skills and opportunities to lead change in their communities. Together, we are shaping a future where women’s leadership is recognized, valued, and celebrated.
